The Greatest Retreat!!!!!!!

September 29, 2010 by Meenal   Comments (10)

Hey,

Take a minute to think about how we spend our day...
We get up, get ready, rush to work, work and tread your way back feeling tired and trodden as much as possible... The day starts with a struggle... A struggle to prove yourself... A struggle to make others feel better... A fight where u are facing people who are only there to judge you... be it family, or friends, work-guys or anybody - do we have one soul in front of whom u can just rip off that mask you wear and show them what u really are???

I don't know how many people would agree to this, but for your Pets, you are The Almighty... U may be A Murderer or A Drug Lord or one of those Mafia Guys - but to your pet you happen to be "His Master" and his world is totally centered around you. They don't dare what your Social Image is, They don't care whether you Win or Loose, They only know that you have loved them. They do not Judge you by your riches, you may be a miser or a spendthrift, you may be Bill Gates or a Road-side Beggar... to your pet you are The God... have you ever considered what your pets think of u?  I mean, you might just walk back from the super-marker with a chicken, pork or maybe half a cow.  And your Dog welcomes you as though you are the greatest hunter on earth! They just make you feel that way...

The great pleasure of having a pet is that you may make a fool of yourself or fall flat on your face or get rejected time and again but your pet will not only 'not scold' you, but he will make a fool of himself to make you feel better... They never talk about themselves but listen to you while you talk about yourself, and keep up an appearance of being interested in the conversation. They have given us their absolute all.  We are the center of their universe.  We are the focus of their love and faith and trust.  They serve us in return for scraps.  It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made.... Dont You think Their Company and the Unconditional Love that they have to offer are the Greatest Retreat

Something Brilliant Happened!!!

September 24, 2010 by Meenal   Comments (6)

, ,

Hey All,
Let me give you a little background before I start the main story...
I have two Labradors... a 5 year old Male Leo and 3 year old female Honey... They live in my apartment with 2 bedrooms and usually share the bedroom with my Mom while my brother occupies the other one... I happen to return late from work and hence they spend most of the time with Mom... Now my mom has some medical issues which restrict her movement to mere basics...
Leo is a little weaker due to hip dysplacia and quiet often get fits.... and honey is only concerned about her diet (she hoggs on anything... she can eat a dinosaur and go looking for more) and her beauty sleep...
Last night Leo went into a fit again... and from what mom tells he was almost dead... he went all tight and stiff and his eyes were puffing out... mom was attending to him when she called out for my brother who was sleeping in the other room... he obviously didnt hear her voice...
and something unexpected happened... the usually dumb and disobedient and worthless and useless and completely untrainable honey just looks at Leo and runs all over the place looking for help... she dashes in my brother's bedroom which is out of bounds otherwise and gets on his bed... licks him, nudges him and then pulls at his clothes till he wakes up... and then runs back and forth between the two bedrooms, evidently telling my brother that mom and Leo need help... m
that how My brother came to know what happened and was able to get the first aid for Leo in time...Its hard to imagine that my stupid, lazy, good - for - nothing Honey is capable of understanding the situation and reacting to it... with i got her when she was a pup and could trai

According to a study done in Britain most dog owners prefer to give their dog the same food they eat at home. While it is true that dog food cooked at home is far better the commercially available, it may not be good to feed your dog all kinds of food that you may eat, I.e. chine food containing MSG (monosodium glutamate) and Chocolates could prove fetal for your pooch while, milk products in some cases where the dog is lactose intolerant could give looses and other stomach related issues. There are various contrasting theories about giving bones to the dogs and further in people who agree to giving dogs there are contrasting theories on what type of bones to give..

Yes your dog can eat almost all other things.. There are myths about dogs should not be fed Sault, Sugar, Oil etc but what your not told is that all dogs food contain all of it. There are many benefits of cooking a fresh meal at home for your pooch... balanced nutrition, maximum digestible nutrients, better health, low medical expenses, happy dog and all this is affordable.

There’s verity of recipes for dog food that are available in our Recipe section and lot more you can find on internet as well, both Veg and Non-Veg are available. You can also see interesting and delicious recipes for dog treats that can be used in training as a reward or just to make your dog happy once in a while. You can make you dog a nice home cooked meal that’s best for them and add spices and ingredients that keep your dogs health at its best.

If you have your own dog recipes and want to share it will everyone then do mail to us on kaushal.guhya@gmail.com and we will be pleased to post it on petdig.com with your name on it.

where to buy non-fur toys for dogs

September 13, 2010 by megha   Comments (2)

, , , ,

My brother's dog has his own toy pet hippo! When a stranger enters or even rings the bell his first instinct is to grab the toy hippopotamus and run to the door.

Its so cute to watch this huge dog trying to intimidate any stranger in all sincerity with a growl that has been muffled because of a toy hippo in his mouth! ha ha ha-very scary!

As dogs do tend to lift toys with their mouth- and as the hippo had already lost his stitched sunglasses, waist jacket and one leg- we thought it to be  a good time to buy a new non-furry toy..

And our problems began.. We searched pet shops, gift shops , kids shops- and all we could find was fur fur and fur. A few leather ones were too delicate and too expensive.

Then came Ganesh Chaturthi and god must have decided it was time he intervened in our search. ( I wonder if my dog prayed to him!)

Here was a toy doggy dangling in front of my eyes completely made up of cloth and of  our doggy's mouth fitting size! where? In a small shop at the main fruit and vegetable market in central Matunga!

Priced at a meager 190/- it was cheaper than some of the fruits and veggies even!  And i got a good bargain by pointing out that it wasn't even a furry toy. ha!

That made me share this- maybe there are people like me who forget to check at the humble looking local market place when shopping for their doggy darlings!

As soon as we showed the doggy this new toy he knew it was his new buddy! I guess dogs can feel the happiness of shopping too!

How He came to me....

September 2, 2010 by Meenal   Comments (8)

, , , , , , ,

Hi, My Name Is... honestly it doesn't matter.... I live in a busy city where we really don't have much time to "Stand and Stare"... rather we don't make an attempt to find the time... Well this is a story of how I met the love of my life for the first time....

I was studying in Ahmedabad then and was back home for a industrial training for around 22 weeks... i used to work all day long to learn how the industry works but that wasn't as much of a pain as the travelling was.... i used to travel almost 3 hours one way which meant i used to reach home in drags around time for late dinner and a few hours of sleep... I didn't bother if i was early or late because i had the thoughts of starting my day early the next day to bother me...

So as usual I reached home on one of the rainy August nights to find my brother smirking at me... i felt like hitting him in the face because that smirk usually meant he had broken something of mine or done something mean to hurt me. My mom sat in her usual place. She just pointed at her feet and said. "Look what happened!" I looked down and saw a tiny extension to her little toe.... wait!!! it moved!!! actually it wagged. i looked at it closely.... it was not attached to her feet.... but it was attached to the back of a very cute little fawn puppy... I looked at my mom and my brother in amazement... I was surprised not because there was a dog in my house....

we had pets for all the time i know... i have had different breeds of dogs, fish, parrots and cats as pets... but it so happened that after the death of my last doberman about 10-12 years back my mom did not allow a dog in the house because she felt we were not capable enough to take care of the dog on our own... i had tried to smuggle a few strays in but unfortunately i could not... so the presence of the little puppy surprised me.

I picked him up... he looked at me with those angel eyes.... he winked... he wagged his little tail and there it was... i was struck with some jolt of light or something... i could feel him smile... i smiled at him and held him close to me chest... he was shivering... i wrapped my arm around the little one... i could feel his heart beats and he could feel mine... he lifted his head to catch my stare and there it was again...

i fell in love with the fur ball... i totally fell for him... He stayed with us after that... We named him Leo... He is a Labrador Retriever... he was only 3 weeks old when we got him... and in his fourth week he fell sick with Jaundice... my heart just gave up...but the fighter that he is, he got well and then at 1 year old we noticed that he had a defect... he could not jump, he would fall when walking... he was diagnosed with hip displacia which is beyond treatment... but he has fought it and still is....

Leo.... my Leo is today 5 years old and is to the best of his health.... all time playful... though he cannot move much, he still knows how to win hearts.... all i know is that whatever days he has with us, i want them to be happy and playful... God bless him

About giving a champi to your darling pet

August 27, 2010 by megha   Comments (3)

people have such confusions about whether dogs can smile or do they dream when they sleep.. and so on.

i don't know if we will ever find any answers to those but i do know from experience that dogs love head massages.

my brother has a fawn colored Dane and whenever i am around him (i.e. around the Dane) you will see me working with my finger tips on his forehead.

As you know fawn Great Danes have black markings on their face that usually  end just over their eye lids.

his eye brows (do dogs have eye brows- another confusion..) always go upwards and he struggles to keep his eyes open as i pamper him!

its so cute and fulfilling to see him like that..

so if you have a dog of your own (i don't know abt cats) and you haven't tried it yet then i strongly recommend a soft handed champi for your sweetheart!

happy champi!

TREAT ME KINDLY

August 26, 2010 by Boski Patel   Comments (3)

, , , , , , ,

Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart that beats inside of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me learn.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world’s sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps fall upon my waiting ear.

Please take me inside with you when it is cold and wet, for I am a domesticated animal, no longer accustomed to the bitter elements. I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.

Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding; to walk by your side and protect you with my life should your life be in danger.

And, my friend, when I am very old and no longer enjoy good health, hearing, and sight, do not make heroic efforts to keep me with you. I am no having any fun. Please see that my trusting life is taken gently. I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath I draw that my fate was always safest in your hands.

Vegetarian Diet for Dogs

August 26, 2010 by Kaushal Guhya   Comments (7)

, , ,

Throughout India and now even in other parts of world the vegetarianism is growing in popularity. According to a research done by pedigree dog food manufacturing company at least 40% Indians are strictly vegetarian including their dogs, as meat, eggs chicken etc are absolute ‘no-no’ for these vegetarians. Amazingly many dog owners and few professionals suggest that vegetarian dogs are low on aggression and it keeps them fitter. On the other hand there are no scientific findings that support such theories of vegetarian diets are better for dogs, in fact we have millions of ‘Non-Veg’ dogs who are very good with their temper and low on aggression and extremely fit.

According to many vets we spoke, to get some insights in this matter, most confirmed that there are many cases that come to vets across the country where dogs are under-nourished because the owners want to feed only veg diet. Many dog experts suggest that Non-veg food is very much essential for dogs. Ms. Kat, Owner of Gourmet dog Bakery and a nutritionist since years, suggests that where a dog will survive on vegetarian diet, he will surely thrive on the non-veg diet. According to Dr. Badgujar, Dogs anatomy is designed to extract maximum out of Non-Veg food, and may not do equally well on vegetarian diet. The simple fact is that dogs that are kept on Veg-Diet are given excessive supplements at times for filling up the nutritional deficit in their diet.

But Only Veg Diet is not the culprit for lack of nutrition in dogs, it’s also the variety. According to an article in ‘Times of India’, dated 26-Aug-2010, Hairstylist Usha Jain, 55, adopted a stray puppy three years ago. It has been on a diet of milk, biscuits, bread ever since. "This way, he'll get used to it and won't eat just anything off the road like other dogs,'' said Usha Jain. Such dog owners need to consult a good nutritionist to realize that such diets hardly give any nutrition to dog.

Reasons for feeding a dog vegetarian food varies from owner to owner, for some it's convenient to get one kind of food in the house or religious believes, others are concerned about their dogs' health and habits. If for any given reason an owner wants to keep his dog Veg, there are few important things to consider first before buying the dog. i.e. the size of dog, type of dog and activity level. Dog owners who want to keep their dogs on a veg diet and still keep them fit have to work a bit harder than others, adding variety is important i.e. veggies, soups, cereals, milk products etc.

According to the article in ‘Time of India’; Bhavna Bhatt, who runs Apollo dogs' boarding house in Noida, says at least 20 of her over 250 clients ask her to give their dogs’ vegetarian food, "I've had cases where dogs did not accept vegetarian food such as curd rice and roti. During longer boardings, this can be a problem as they start getting weaker. I have had to phone the owners to ask them if I can give them boiled chicken with rice or roti. Most of them agree. And the dog is usually more receptive to this Nov-Veg food,'' says Bhatt.Doctors, however  recommend a substantial non-vegetarian component in dogs' diet to meet their protein requirements.

Jangpura-based vet Dr Anil Sood says a mixed diet for dogs, helps them get fibres from vegetables and proteins from meat. "A purely vegetarian diet for dogs is not healthy at all. It can make their muscles weak and their coat rough. But for people who insist on vegetarian food, I recommend that they at least feed their dogs cottage cheese as it is protein-rich,'' says Dr Sood.

The ‘Animal Welfare Board of India’, on the other hand, makes a strong case for vegetarian food for our domesticated furry friends, dedicating an entire page on their website to it. It includes tips on how to keep your dog vegetarian, converting your dog into one and also lists healthy vegetarian alternatives for dogs with recipes.Interestingly, in Somerset, England, Anne Heritage's Border collie Bramble lived to be 19. Anne kept the dog on a completely vegan diet, feeding it a mixture of rice and lentils. However, modern science claims that the age of the living being is more decided by the gene then its food being veg or non-veg.

Indeed, there's a lot more to think about when you make a choice between the leg piece and the lettuce for your pooch.
